The Dam Bucket is one of several existing settlement Itamarati I used to capture water for irrigation. It was much used by the former Finance Foreign Ministry for fish-farming projects and today is infested with snails infected with schistosomiasis. The warning is the Center for Epidemiological Control of Ponta Pora, which collected water for analysis and set a sign prohibiting their use or contact with residents of the water.


According to health authorities, a case is under review, a resident who was infected by the disease. Residents near the dam are cleaning the tanks for fish, to try to reactivate them. That would be a health hazard, since the fish would also be contaminated. Infection occurs when skin comes into contact with contaminated water they live in certain types of snails that carry schistosomiasis.


Water becomes contaminated by Schistosoma eggs when infected people urinate or defecate in it. The eggs hatch, and if certain types of snails are present in the water, the parasite grows and develops within them. The parasite leaves the snail and enters the water, where it can survive for around 48 hours. The Schistosoma parasites can penetrate the skin of people who are bathing or swimming in contaminated water from lakes, rivers or canals.
